Telemachus reaches Ithaca, walks to Eumaeus

Scenes

  1. Ship Reaches Shore — At dawn, Telemachus sends ship to town
    • Crew furls the sail, moors the ship
    • They breakfast together on the shore
    • He plans to visit his fields first
    • Will follow on foot by evening
    • Vows a feast with meat and wine
  2. Lodging for the Seer — Telemachus names suitor Eurymachus as host
    • Theoclymenus asks about lodging in this land
    • Telemachus admits he cannot host him now
    • Penelope keeps to her upper chamber weaving
    • Calls him most eager to wed Penelope
    • Warns only Zeus knows the suitors’ fate
  3. Falcon Omen — Falcon kills dove, a kingly omen
    • Falcon flies past as Apollo’s messenger
    • Feathers scatter between the two of them
    • Theoclymenus pulls Telemachus aside at once
    • Declares no house in Ithaca more kingly
    • Telemachus vows to be a generous friend
  4. To the Swineherd’s Lodge — Piraeus hosts the seer, Telemachus departs
    • Piraeus agrees to give every comfort
    • Sends the ship to town with crew
    • Straps on sandals, takes up his spear
    • Walks on foot to the swine-yard
    • Eumaeus keeps careful watch over the herds
