Laertes slays Eupeithes, Athena ends it

  1. Odysseus Arms for Battle — Odysseus’ band marches to meet Ithacans
    • Athena plunges down from Olympus, encouraged
    • Odysseus posts a lookout for the Ithacans
    • Dolius’ son spots the armed band nearing
    • Gray-headed Laertes and Dolius don bronze
    • All sally forth through the open doors
  2. Mentor Rallies Kin — Odysseus urges Telemachus, Laertes rejoices
    • Athena arrives in Mentor’s borrowed form
    • Odysseus recognizes her with joy
    • Telemachus vows no dishonor on the family
    • Laertes calls it a blessed day
    • Son and grandson rival in courage
  3. Eupeithes Slain — Eupeithes falls, Odysseus routs survivors
    • Urges Laertes to pray and throw spear
    • Sudden strength fills the old man
    • Spear pierces Eupeithes’ helmet and cheek
    • Both charge forward with sword and lance
    • Odysseus chases fleeing foes like an eagle
  4. Peace Restored — Athena restrains Odysseus, seals peace
    • Warns Zeus’ anger may fall on him
    • Odysseus breaks off the pursuit at once
    • Still wearing Mentor’s shape and voice
    • Covenant ends the strife for good
